Preview is Apple’s utility for viewing images and PDF files, and one of the options it has is the ability to export an image to a different file format. By default, the format selection menu in Preview contains options for JPEG, JPEG-2000, OpenEXR, PDF, PNG (default selection), and TIFF; however, in addition you can choose from GIF, ICNS, Microsoft BMP, Microsoft ICON, Photoshop, SGI, and TGA by holding the Option key when you open this menu. Here are the necessary steps to convert the PNG / JPG as desired with Preview:
STEP 1: Launch the origin PNG or JPG file
In the first step you have to Launch the original PNG or JPG file within Preview app of OS X, do this by double-clicking or dragging it into the preview icon
STEP 2: File menu and Duplicate
Now Just Go to > File menu and tap or Click on “Duplicate” (in new versions of OS X) – and if you are using a older versions of Preview app and the Mac is really old you won’t see the Duplicate option, you can therefore skip this and go directly to Export or Save As
STEP 3: Export
With the newly duplicate file open in Preview, pull down the File menu again and go down to ‘Export’ (or choose “Save As”)
STEP 4: Select Image file Format
Select “JPG” or “PNG” under the ‘Format’ drop down list
STEP 5: Save and Export
Click “Save” to export the file converted to the new image format
Your PNG file now has been converted and saved as a JPG file to the location you specified in Finder! If you want you can go back and delete the origin file, that is up to you.
