A basic, but important, concept to understand when using a computer is cut, copy and paste commands. These commands will permit you to easily move data from one application to another or from one location to another. Although, these commands are considered as basic commands but you will be surprised to know that many people are there who do not know about these basic commands.

Once you know about these cut, copy and paste commands, you will be able to use this knowledge on any of the application because these commands are common to all the application software. All these commands are present in the Home tab of excels window. In this we will learn method of using these commands.

Before using these commands, you must select some data because if you do not have any data selected then these commands will not work. Now, select some data from the worksheet (Fig.EX-2.8) to proceed ahead for executing these commands.

To move a cell selection with Cut and Paste, follow these steps: Select the cells containing data you want to move. Click the Cut button in the Clipboard group on the Home tab (the button with the scissors icon). Alternatively, press Ctrl+X.

The cut command is useful when you want to move the original data from its current location. After selection of some data, follow these steps given below:

  1. Click on the home tab as shown and then
  2. Click on the cut button present in clipboard group.
  3. The selected data get dotted outlined which shows that the data is ready to move on the new location.

How to copy in excel? The copy command is same as that of the previous one (cut command), the only difference is that the original data will not move from its original location, a duplicate copy of data is available to you, and you can move this data to desired location. To copy the selected data, follow the steps:

  1. Click on the home tab.
  2. Click on the copy button present in clipboard group.
  3. Again the selected data get dotted outlined which shows that the data is ready to move on the new location.

The paste command is useful when you want to paste the data, which you have cropped or cut from the original location. When you copy or cut some data from a location then it becomes necessary to paste the data to make it usable. It is up to you that where you want to paste the data. In the the given example we will paste the data on the same sheet at the location.

Following are the steps to paste the copied data on the selected location:

  1. Select some cells in worksheet and after selecting cells click on the home tab.
  2. Click on the Paste button present in clipboard group.
  3. The copied data will move to the selected location
