Every desktop PC or windows laptop has many different types of files and documents, and probably multiple programs that can open each one. So, it’s up to you to select which program or app you want to use the most. Windows has this built-in default program option which makes it easy for you to open up these files by setting up default programs for each file type. You can set default program for these types of files – images, video files, music files, documents and many more.

A default program is the program that Windows uses when you open a particular type of file, such as a music file, an image, or a webpage. For example, if you have more than one web browser installed on your computer, you can choose one of them to be the default browser.

  6. Now you will see two options one is Set this program as default, which means than it will open all the files and protocols that it can open by default.
  7. Second option is Choose default for this program, which means it can open only those type of files that you want it to open. For example: like Windows 10 Photo app, it can open all types of files JPEGs and PNGs and more. But, if you want that Windows 10 Photo app should only open JPEGs files then you can select second option.
  8. To set defaults for individual protocols (e.g., you want to set up your PC so that Gmail opens when you click an email address on a Web page), click Choose default apps by protocol. Find the protocol you want to change the default app for, click the current default app, and choose the app you want to use from the pop-up menu.
