HP Spectre x360 Design

With its rounded edges, minimalist branding and optional copper-colored sides and hinges, the new Spectre x360 13t screams luxury. Another major aspect (and one that has been pushed quite a bit by the company) of the Spectre’s design is its thickness, or the lack of it. Measuring just 10.4mm (0.41-inch) at the thickest point, the Spectre makes Apple’s 12-inch MacBook (0.52- inch) and MacBook Air (0.68-inch) look chunky in comparison. Not surprisingly, it weighs just around 1.1kg and is thus, extremely light and easy to carry around.

The Spectre’s chiclet keyboard comes with backlit keys and features a trackpad too. During our testing, we found both the keyboard and the trackpad to be extremely responsive.

HP Spectre x360
HP Spectre x360

Because of the Spectre’s 360-degree hinge, it can be used in a variety of modes, including a regular laptop, a tablet (with the keyboard folded all the way back), a display (resting on the keyboard with the screen facing the user) and a tent (folded into an upside-down “V”).

While many other Windows machines attempt to be more than a laptop by transforming into a tablet, the Spectre is content with just being a very well executed traditional laptop that expects you to interact with it solely through the keyboard and trackpad.

Compared with other very thin, very light laptops, such as the 12-inch MacBook, the keyboard on the HP Spectre really stands out as excellent. The keys are a little shallower than on a more full-size 13-inch laptop, such as HP’s own Spectre x360, but this is still a standard island-style keyboard that doesn’t have the learning curve of something like the very flat keys on the MacBook.

Despite the Gorilla Glass, the Spectre’s display isn’t a touchscreen, which is a bit odd for a high-end Windows 10 laptop.  HP says that a touchscreen panel would have made the Spectre thicker, so it was omitted in the pursuit of thinness.

Benchmark Score How it Compares
Brightness 308 nits Strong
Color Gamut (sRGB) 111 percent Strong
Color Accuracy (Delta e) 1 Strong

The Spectre x360’s screen clocked in at 307.6 nits of brightness on our light meter, just under the ultraportable category average of 309 nits. The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 was the brightest of the group at 382 nits, while the Lenovo Yoga 900 was the most dim at 284 nits.

The glass touchpad is very good for a Windows laptop, but small enough that it makes you miss the ease of use that comes with a touchscreen in Windows 10.

In terms of display, HP Spectre has a Full HD IPS display with edge-to-edge Corning Gorilla Glass protection. During our time with the device, we found the display to be sharp and having good viewing angles. The display, however, turned out to be extremely reflective and prone to smudges.

The vocals, rhythmic clapping and synthesized melodies were all rich and powerful, no matter whether I used the Spectre as a laptop, stand, display or tent.

Bang & Olufsen’s software was buried in the system tray (it wasn’t listed in the list of programs), and for good reason: there’s not much you can do with it besides adjust the volume. Luckily, the speakers sound good enough on their own not to need the extra help.

Despite being thinner, the Spectre 13 doesn't make some of the tradeoffs the MacBook does. There are three USB-C ports here (two of which support Thunderbolt) and a headphone jack

HP Spectre x360 Performance

With a Core i7-6500U CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, our review configuration of the Spectre X360 provided more than enough performance for productivity and entertainment.

Benchmark Score How it Compares
Geekbench 3 6,829 Strong
Spreadsheet Macro Test 4:02 Strong
File Transfer Test 173.38 MBps Above Average

The Spectre x360 achieved a score of 6,829 on the Geekbench 3 synthetic performance test, beating the Surface Pro 4’s score of 6,811 (Core i5-6300U, 8GB of RAM) and the Yoga 900’s mark of 6,264 (Core i7-6500U, 16GB of RAM) by a hair.

While running the benchmark tests, the HP Spectre scored 4199 on PCMark and 3748 on 3DMark. The low score on 3DMark implies that the Spectre isn’t meant to be a gaming laptop. It’s intended to be an elite business notebook, and in that regard it surely succeeds.

HP says the efficient cooling allows the CPUs to run at their full speed, rather than being underclocked, which sometimes happens when you try to put too much processor into too small a space.
HP says the efficient cooling allows the CPUs to run at their full speed, rather than being underclocked, which sometimes happens when you try to put too much processor into too small a space.

The Spectre x360’s solid-state drive is faster than the average ultraportable, delivering a transfer rate of 173.4 MBps. However, the Lenovo Yoga 900 was slightly faster, and the Surface Pro 4 blew past them both at more than 300 MBps.

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 GPU isn’t enough to handle intensive video games like Far Cry Primal or Tom Clancy’s The Division.

Hp specter x360 price

Starting at $999 (£849, AU$1,999), the 13-inch HP Spectre x360 has everything I need in a thin-and-light laptop. I don’t ask for much: just a comfortable, lightweight machine with great looks, long battery life, plenty of speed and an excellent selection of ports.

One big difference for 2016: there’s a new 15-inch model that starts at $1,149. I tried both the 13- and 15-inch models, and they’re practically identical.

This 2-in-1 ($899 starting, $1,520 as tested) has a beautiful metallic design that looks good whether it’s in laptop, tablet, tent or stand mode. Add in strong performance, above-average battery life and powerful speakers, and you have one of the best 13-inch convertible laptops on the market.

If you’re shopping around, the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro is an obvious competitor here, in that it’s also a slim, lightweight 15-inch machine with a high-res screen (2,880 x 1,800 in this case). Incidentally, it’s actually thicker and heavier than the x360 (4.49 pounds and 0.71 inches thick), and that’s without a 360-degree hinge or touchscreen weighing it down. For that starting price of $1,999, though, you get some admittedly more powerful components, including a quad-core Core i7 processor and Intel Iris graphics, with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of solid-state storage standard.

The 15-inch x360 starts at $1,150 with a 2.3GHz dual-core Core i5-6200U processor, integrated Intel HD 520 graphics, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB solid-state drive and a 1080p display. From there, you can get 16GB of RAM ($80), upgrade to a 4K screen ($60) or double the storage capacity to 256GB ($200). There are other processor options too, including Core i7-6500U ($60) and Core i7-6560U ($200), the latter of which includes beefier Intel Iris graphics. If you care, that in-between Core i7-6500U chip can be configured with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM while the higher-end 6560U processor is 16GB only. All told, assuming you went with all the upgrade options I just ticked off, the price would be $1,690 before tax.

Hp specter x360 Charging time, Battery Life and Battery capacity

The Spectre x360 is one of the longest-running 2-in-1s we’ve tested. The system’s 3-cell 56-wHr battery lasted 9 hours and 28 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test (Web surfing via Wi-Fi at 100 nits).

The HP Spectre x360 lasted an impressive 8 hours and 26 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test, which involves continuous Web browsing over Wi-Fi at 100 nits of brightness. That’s a tad longer than the ultraportable category average of 8:09, and should be enough for you to keep your laptop unplugged most of the day. The Lenovo Yoga 900 fared worse at 7:57, while the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 endured for only 6:05.

HP says the machine’s 64.5Wh battery should run for up to nine and a half hours on a charge. I can’t speak for the 4K edition, but the lower-res 1080p model I tested actually beat that estimate, lasting exactly 10 hours and 17 minutes before giving up the ghost.

HP spectre x360 Different Models and Configurations

The HP Spectre x360 13t that we reviewed came with a Core i7-6500U CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and a 2560 x 1440 touch screen. When we configured it on HP’s site, it cost $1,519.99.

The base model costs $899.99 and comes in silver instead of black and gold. It has an Intel Core i5-6200U processor, 4GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD and a 1080p display.

There are a number of customization options, but we recommend a $999.99 option, which comes with a Core i5-6200U, 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM, and a 1080p touch screen, which should be enough for most users. This version comes in silver — the black-and-gold combination doesn’t come into play until you reach the $1,149.99 price.

Bottom Line or Conclusion

It does all of the things a traditional laptop should do: it has a great display, great keyboard, good trackpad, fast, quiet performance, and can be used on your lap without feeling like it’s all going to fall apart. And the Spectre does all of this while being thin and light enough to carry around all day.

There is no doubting the fact that the HP Spectre is a powerful and impressively built business-grade laptop. And its premium design further makes it stand out from the crowd. But even with all of that, the Spectre isn’t without its shortcomings. A glossy reflective display, average battery life and limited connectivity options are all downers for the laptop.
