The Bubble Nebula, discovered in 1787 by British astronomer William Herschel, is a large cloud of gas and dust illuminated by a giant star.
The hot gases at varying temperatures emit different colors: oxygen is hot enough to emit blue light in the bubble close to the star, while the coldest pillars are yellow light of the combined hydrogen and nitrogen. The pillars are similar to the iconic columns of the “pillars of creation” in the Eagle Nebula. As seen with the structures of the Eagle Nebula, the pillars of the bubble are illuminated by the strong ultraviolet radiation from the bright star within the bubble, NASA said.
It is located 8,000 light years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. The bubble diameter is ten light years and continues to grow.
Scientists shared four detailed images to give the public a full view of the bubble for the first tim
