How to Replace the Broken Screen of a Samsung Galaxy S4

1 Purchase a replacement glass.

You can buy a replacement glass for your Galaxy S4 from an online store or from a local cell phone repair shop.

2 Gather the things you need. Prepare the following before sitting down to replace your phone screen:

A small, thin plastic tool to wedge between the glass and the digitizer
Hot air gun
Lever tool
Transparent tape or packing tape
A lint-free cloth

3 Turn the phone over.

The back of the unit should be in front of you.

4 Uncover the back cover.

Do this by inserting a fingernail into the slot that is slightly higher than the power button on the right side of the device, then carefully pull the back of the device.

5 Remove the battery, SIM card and memory card.

Store them in a place where you will not lose them.

6 Remove Broken Glass Screen:

Get a hot air gun and put it on the lowest heat option. The heat gun will be used to soften the glue that holds the glass to the digitizer.
The digitizer is the component that detects the touch input and joins the screen.

7 Turn on the hot air gun and heat the front of the phone.

Warm it for 3 to 5 minutes while holding it about 6 inches away from the phone.

DO NOT warm the glass for long periods, as it could melt the digitizer, causing discoloration. If this happens, immediately turn off the gun.

8 Gently pull and lift the glass from a corner using the lever tool.

Leverage the glass until you have a space where you can put something.

Do this slowly because throwing the glass hastily can break it.

9 Insert a guitar nail or similar thin and light object into the space.

This is so that the glass does not slip back into place.

If the glass is broken, cover it with packing tape to keep it intact.

10 Continue work gently around the glass until all corners are raised.

Once the corners are separated from the glue, the glass will be easier to remove.

11 Proceed to raise the glass towards the center.

If you find it difficult to lift it, heat the glass again to prevent the glue from cooling.

Be careful when removing the glass in the area of the Home button and the capacitive touch buttons.

12 Clean remaining residue on glue.

Carefully wipe any residue with the lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol.

DO NOT soak the screen with alcohol.

13 Install Replacement Glass:

Remove the blue tape from the replacement screen. Be sure not to touch the bottom of the glass, as it contains glues and will leave stains difficult to remove if you touch it.

14 Place the new glass on the front of the Galaxy S4, with the glue facing the scanner.

Apply slight pressure along the sides and in the center.

Make sure you do not apply too much pressure as you may damage the scanner.

15 Place the phone battery, SIM card, memory card, and back cover.

Now you can assemble the phone and clean the new glass with a lint-free cloth.

Dropped and cracked the screen on your Galaxy S4? No problem, follow this guide instead of needing to replace the entire display assembly.

Step 1 Cracked Front Glass

Step 2

Now you have to Remove the back cover of your S4 device. To remover the cover of your Samsung Galaxy S4, you can use your hands to dissemble the rear phone cover or you can use some other tool.

Step 3

Now you have to remove the battery of your Samsung galaxy S4 battery and you can do it by using your fingernail. It’s pretty simple.
And the last thing you have to remove is the SIM card from your phone, just push your sim card inwards then release to eject it.

Now comes the hardest bit. You have to Heat up the glass for 3-5 minutes. I would say do it in-between it, 4 minutes is recommended.
You must use heatgun for this task. And make sure that you are using heatgun on the lowest setting. Don’t use any other type of tool like hair dryer or anything elese. just stick with heatgun.
You must be careful when using the heat gun on this device. If the device is heated up too much then it may melt the digitizer and cause discoloration. If you start to see any discoloration then shut off the gun immediately
This procedure softens the adhesive that holds the glass to the screen assembly.

Step 5

After using the heatgun on your galaxy S4 glass, you have to dissemble or separate the edges of the glass from the rest of the phone, you can start from the top.
You can use metal spudger initially, but use it carefully and try not to damage anything.

Step 6

It take’s time and determination, make sure that you work slowly otherwise the Galaxy S4 glass will shatter.
If anytime during this you see that glass is shattering or cracking, try to cover it up with packing tape, so that it remains in one piece.
Always wear safety glasses, if glass is shattering to keep yourself safe.

Step 7

You have to Re-heat the glass two three times until the whole glass comes out. If the galaxy S4 glass isn’t coming off easily and you are facing problems to remove it , thrn apply more heat and then continue.

Step 8

After you have removed glass from your galaxy S4, you will see adhesive residue leftover on the digitizer. It will look messy.

Step 9

Now you have to clean that residue leftover on the digitizer. You can use free wipes or a clean microfiber towel to clean residue.
Please be careful while cleaning the digitizer and if by any chance you have scratched your galaxy S4 digitizer, you don’t have to worry, when the screen is turned on it’s not noticeable.
If the leftover residue or glue on S4 digitizer is not coming off and you are unable to remove it then you can also use nail polish remover and it will do the job. It takes only a few seconds to get all the dirt off and it will evaporate.

Step 10

Now you have to Place the new adhesive around the edges of your Samsung Galaxy S.
Now you have to Peel off the blue bit on the top of the adhesive.

Step 11

Now you have to Prepare your new glass. If yours is covered both sides then only remove the under side.
Be careful, and you must not touch the underside of new glass and keep it free from any dust or marks.

Step 12

Now you have to Put the new glass on your Samsung galaxy S4 phone.
You should use LOCA glue while assembling the screen. you can watch some good videos on youtube showing how to apply the glue.
Do it carefully, and prevent your phone ear piece, and front facing camera from glue. Make sure that it does not enters these areas.
Now just Peel off the top plastic cover on the glass.

Now you have to put the Galaxy S4 battery and SIM card back in. It’s quite easy to do that, after all that engineering.
